High Blood Pressure - Risks Associated

High blood pressure often has a tendency to increase the risk of developing heart (cardiac) disease, kidney (renal) disease, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis), eye damage, and stroke (brain damage). These complications of hypertension are called end-organ damage because damage to these organs is the end result of chronic (long duration) high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure Symptoms are toughest to observe because it often begins without producing any symptoms. It contributes to stroke, heart attacks, kidney failure, heart failure, erectile dysfunction and atherosclerosis. It may also lead to blindness. The risk of heart disease and stroke doubles for every 20 mm Hg increase in systolic blood pressure or for every 10 mm Hg increase of diastolic blood pressure. The higher the blood pressure, the greater is the risk of getting complications.

The biggest challenge faced by people with high blood pressure is heart attack. When the heart has to pump harder in order to push the blood into the arteries and arterioles, the heart comes under a huge stress. When the heart is forced to work under such stress for prolonged periods of time there is a danger of heart getting enlarged and subsequent cardiac arrest. Angina (pain over the front of the chest upon exertion) and Claudication (pain from obstructed leg arteries) are increasingly common in men in their middle age and are much more likely in people with high blood pressure, even if this has been controlled by treatment. They are much less common in women, unless they have been heavy smokers. Often they are not recognized, angina being dismissed as indigestion and intermittent claudication as arthritis. High blood pressure can also adversely impact kidney functioning.

If left untreated high blood pressure can cause a number of medical problems. It is, therefore, very important to be aware of the risk factors. These include: a diet that is too high in salt (more than 1 teaspoon of salt per day), being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, not exercising enough, a diet that lacks fresh fruit and vegetables. Numerous clinical trials have shown the beneficial effects of lowering blood pressure to acceptable levels. This benefit has been repeatedly confirmed in all ethnic groups, at all ages and in both males and females. Bringing down the blood pressure to ideal levels reduces the incidence of stroke is by about 40%, heart attack by 25% and heart failure by more than 50%. Resperate Blood Pressure monitoring devices are best in their classes and helpful in dealing with high blood pressure.
